Residents look to the new year

What is your greatest wish for 2005?

December 30, 2004

The new year is just about here. We all might have something to wish for in 2005. We decided to ask 12 locals -- for the number of months in the year -- for their greatest wish for the new year.

MICHAEL KAUPP

Age: 56

Occupation: Retail business owner of Stanford Court

WISH: "On both a global and personal level, I wish for tolerance, acceptance and thoughtfulness in the New Year. On a local level I hope the Visioning process for downtown that is currently taking place, will be implemented and become a reality for all to enjoy. I hope that San Clemente's success is encouraged and our history and charm protected."

DIARMUID NOONE

Age: 36

Occupation: Molly Bloom's Irish Bar and Restaurant owner

WISH: "Peaceful and happy year."

MENDEL SLAVIN

Age: 27

Occupation: Rabbi at Chabad Jewish Center of San Clemente

WISH: "We hope, we the Jewish people believe that we will have the ultimate redemption when Moshiach is going to come." He said Moshiach, who is sent by God to make the world a better place, according to his religion, will bring peace and no fighting. "No hunger, no fighting, no starving. ... Everybody's just going to get along. ... Every good thing we do, we bring him closer."

ERIKA HARLEY

WISH: "To finish school." She has attended Saddleback College for about four years, majoring in sociology. "Just to follow through and finish it."

LT. WILLIAM HUNT

Age: 42

Occupation: Chief of San Clemente Police Services

WISH: "I guess I would have to say as the police chief I want what all police chiefs want -- lowered crimes and less injury accidents."

FRANK DENISON

Age: 80

Occupation: Retired professor/active in the VFW and American Legion

WISH: "Peace. ... I'd like to see peace and I'd like to see more harmony between people and good will ... a lot more love and kindness."

KAREN WALL

WISH: "We're hoping we're going to have a good, library wise, a good and successful new year."

REV. CANON DIANE JARDINE BRUCE

Age: 48

Occupation: Rector at St. Clement's By the Sea Episcopal Church

WISH: "For me, it would be peace throughout the world. It is absolutely my most heartfelt wish. That we have no more war and that peace would reign throughout the world. What's been in my heart especially today and the last few days is all of the disaster in South East Asia, with the tsunamis ... that families find peace."

MARY MOORE

(I) do hope that the new year will bring them home right away. ... It would be nice to also see a cure for cancer. ... There's a lot to wish for in this world."
