Prayers, vigils offer comfort

Grief O.C. churches plan events in addition to Saturday's National Prayer Vigil.

Prayer services and candlelight vigils offer opportunities for spiritual connection across Orange County.
Among the events will be a National Prayer Vigil from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in which more than 1,000 churches will be linked by satellite in all 50 states. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Franklin Graham, CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Christian author Max Lucado and others will be participating. Sponsor of the event is Atlanta-based INJOY.

For churches in Orange County, check the www. injoy.com Web site. Churches wanting to participate can register there, too.

Other events being planned include:

St. Clement's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 202 Avenida Aragon, San Clemente. Prayer service, 6 p.m. today and Friday.

Templo Calvario, 2617 W. Fifth St., Santa Ana, is scheduled to hold services this week and offer support services, which are available in Spanish and English.

Synagogues throughout Orange County will dedicate their Sabbath services on Friday and Saturday in support of the United States and in solidarity with the people of Israel. For a complete list of synagogues and time of services, call the Jewish Federation of Orange County, (714) 755-5555.

The city of Westminster will sponsor a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. tonight at Civic Center, 8200 Westminster Blvd. Representatives from local churches will speak. The Nicholson Pipes and Drum band will perform. Candles will be provided, but residents are encouraged to bring their own. Information: (714) 898-3311 Ext. 402.

Grace Community Church of Seal Beach, 138 Eighth St., will hold a ``Gathering for Prayer'' at 7 p.m. tonight. In addition to prayer, appropriate Bible readings and songs will be offered.

St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 585 S. Walnut Ave., Brea, will hold a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today. All faiths welcome.

Students at Santa Ana College will hold a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the campus amphitheater, 1530 W. 17th St. Public is welcome.

The Latest Thing, 270 E. 17th St., Costa Mesa, will hold ``Prayer for Peace: Candle Lighting Vigil'' from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday. The ecumenical gathering for healing the heart of America is open to everyone. Bring a candle to light as prayers for peace are offered from many traditions. The event is sponsored by The Crystal Foundation, in conjunction with The Latest Thing and The First Woman's Church in Costa Mesa.

Lutherans are working together with the interfaith community through Lutheran Social Services to offer shelter, prayer and counseling. Locally, services are being coordinated by John T. Clawson at 1501 E. Orangethorpe Ave., Suite 250, Fullerton. (714) 626-1800.
